American Heart Association (AHA) Authorized

CPR Certification for
Coaches in Utah | CPR, AED, and First Aid

Athletic coaches in Utah are required to maintain high-quality, hands-on CPR and first aid certification through an approved provider. The Utah State Board of Education’s current coaching rule specifically requires athletic coaches to maintain these certifications, and the American Heart Association is listed as an approved provider.

For coaches working with athletes, CPR and first aid training prepares them to respond to cardiac arrest, breathing emergencies, serious injuries, heat-related illness, and other medical emergencies that can occur during practices, competitions, games, tournaments, and team activities.

The appropriate AHA course depends on the coach’s responsibilities and the requirements of the school, athletic program, employer, or organization. Coaches who need BLS certification can complete the applicable AHA training through Utah CPR Classes.

Overview of BLS, Heartsaver, ACLS, and PALS Certifications for Firefighters

CPR, AED, and first aid training provides coaches with practical emergency-response skills needed while supervising athletes.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is designed for people who are not healthcare professionals but have a responsibility to respond to emergencies because of their job or other duties. It combines first aid, CPR, and AED training and is relevant to coaches who need comprehensive emergency-response training.

Heartsaver CPR AED focuses on CPR and AED response for people who need these skills because of their workplace or responsibilities.

BLS Provider is designed primarily for healthcare professionals and other personnel whose jobs require healthcare-level CPR. Coaches should take AHA BLS when their employer, healthcare setting, or specific professional responsibilities require a BLS Provider course.

For athletic coaches in Utah, the state rule requires high-quality, hands-on CPR and first aid certification through an approved provider. Coaches should maintain the specific certification accepted by their school, athletic organization, employer, or governing body.

Important: Coaching certification and training requirements in Utah may vary by sport, school or organization, age group, employer, and coaching role. Always verify which CPR, AED, first aid, BLS, and other training or credentialing courses are required by your specific school, team, league, or organization before registering.

What Special Situations Do Coaches Face That Require CPR?

Coaches supervise athletes during physical activity, often in environments where an injury or medical emergency can develop with little warning. Practices, competitions, conditioning sessions, tournaments, and travel activities can all require immediate emergency response.

Common situations requiring CPR, AED use, or first aid skills include:

01
Sudden Cardiac Arrest During Practice or Competition

An athlete can suddenly collapse and become unresponsive during practice, conditioning, a game, or competition.

A coach who recognizes cardiac arrest must activate the emergency response system, begin CPR, and use an AED when available while waiting for emergency medical services.

02
Collapse During Intense Physical Activity

Sprint training, conditioning drills, endurance activities, and high-intensity practices place substantial physical demands on athletes.

A sudden collapse requires the coach to stop the activity, assess the athlete, activate the appropriate emergency response, and provide CPR or first aid when indicated.

03
Heat-Related Illness

Athletes training or competing in hot and humid conditions can develop heat-related illness.

Coaches should recognize signs of serious heat illness and respond according to the team’s emergency action plan while obtaining emergency medical assistance when required.

04
Head Injuries and Concussions

Athletes can sustain head injuries during contact sports, falls, collisions, and other athletic activities.

Utah’s coaching standards separately require athletic coaches to receive annual training in responding to concussions and head injuries.

CPR and first aid certification does not replace concussion-specific training, but it forms part of a coach’s broader emergency preparedness.

05
Severe Bleeding and Athletic Injuries

Athletes can experience significant bleeding from collisions, falls, equipment-related injuries, or other accidents.

Coaches may need to provide immediate first aid while emergency medical assistance is being arranged.

06
Fractures, Sprains, and Dislocations

Contact sports, jumping, running, and rapid changes of direction can result in musculoskeletal injuries.

First aid training helps coaches respond appropriately while protecting the athlete from further injury and arranging additional medical evaluation when necessary.

What Makes CPR Certification Non-Negotiable for Coaches?

Coaches Are Responsible for Athletes During Team Activities

Utah’s coaching standards require coaches and designated school leaders to diligently supervise students during school-sponsored activities, including on competition sites, in locker rooms, seating areas, eating establishments, lodging facilities, and while traveling.

Emergency preparedness is therefore relevant beyond the playing field.

Cardiac Arrest Requires Immediate Action

When an athlete experiences cardiac arrest, waiting for an ambulance to arrive before beginning CPR can delay critical treatment.

Immediate CPR and AED use are important components of the response to sudden cardiac arrest.

Sports Injuries Can Happen Without Warning

Coaches routinely supervise activities involving running, jumping, contact, speed, athletic equipment, and physical conditioning.

A coach may need to provide first aid immediately after an injury occurs.

Coaches May Be the First Adults Available During an Emergency

During practices and competitions, the coach is often physically present with the team when an athlete becomes injured or suddenly ill.

Current hands-on CPR and first aid training helps coaches respond while additional medical assistance is being activated.

Utah Requires Hands-On CPR and First Aid Certification for Athletic Coaches

Utah’s current coaching standards require an athletic coach to maintain high-quality, hands-on CPR and first aid certification through an approved provider. The rule also requires annual training addressing concussions and head injuries.

This makes current CPR and first aid certification an important part of an athletic coach’s required training in Utah.

On-Site CPR, AED & First Aid Training for Coaching Teams

Schools, athletic departments, clubs, recreation programs, and sports organizations often need to train multiple coaches while maintaining normal practices and competition schedules.

Utah CPR Classes provides on-site CPR, AED, and first aid training for eligible organizations and groups. Bringing training to the organization can make it easier to coordinate certification around practices, games, tournaments, coaching schedules, and facility operations.

On-site training may be useful for:

I was worried that this might be too complicated for me being a first time learner. The interactive portion on the dummies could not have been easier. I was reassured by the prompts the entire time, given direction and knew if I passed right away. I like how you are given as many chances to pass as needed so it takes the pressure off if being perfect. This was great!

I recently missed our office annual office BLS recert and had to scramble for a quick substitute. As a hospice nurse, my schedule is a bit hectic, and this option " fit the bill". Allowing home time to complete the e- learning course allowed me to start and stop the modules at my convenience. I appreciated the host doing a virtual facility tour of the building allowing me to feel confident on finding/ entering the skills training room on the 3rd floor. I also appreciated the interactive computer with a non- judgemental correction and suggestions to enhance and complete my skills pass-off. The optional practice session with it's constructive support before each tested section is a plus! I would recommend this experience to busy medical professionals.
Response from the owner:Laurie, we appreciate the thoughtful review and recommendation. We are glad the at-home e-learning, virtual tour, interactive computer feedback and optional practice session fit your hectic schedule and helped you feel prepared for skills testing. We value your trust and look forward to supporting your future needs.
Easy. Fast. Informative. Exactly what I needed
Response from the owner:Thanks for the perfect rating, Stephanie. We’re glad the experience was quick, clear and helpful and that it met your needs. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to assisting you again.

I admit that I was intimidated knowing that it was going to be just me, a computer, and manikins in the room. I'll only ever be doing it this way in the future now. I really appreciate the heads-up email about an hour prior providing common mistakes and videos to review beforehand. I took my time while in the room and taking advantage of every practice opportunity it provided prior to the assessment. Took me no longer than 15 minutes. Incredibly easy to use, helpful feedback, and helps me feel more confident. This process makes you feel like it's the absolute best and efficient use of your time. Great company. Thanks for providing this service! I'll be back in 2 years.
Response from the owner:Vanessa, thank you for sharing your experience. We are so pleased the pre-session email, practice opportunities, and feedback made the session efficient and confidence-building. We look forward to welcoming you again in two years.
Response from the owner:We truly appreciate your fantastic review. It was a pleasure serving you, and we look forward to your next visit.

The requirement depends on whether the individual is considered an athletic coach under the applicable Utah coaching standards and the requirements of the school or athletic organization. Assistant coaches should confirm their certification requirements with their school or athletic program.

Yes, when the coach completes an AHA Heartsaver CPR AED or Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course. These courses include AED training as part of the applicable course.
