CPR Certification
for EMTs in Utah | BLS, CPR, and AED

EMTs in Utah need current AHA BLS Provider certification to meet the CPR requirement associated with Utah EMS licensure. BLS provides EMTs with the core skills required for high-quality CPR, AED use, ventilation, and response to cardiac arrest in both prehospital and in-facility settings. Utah BEMS specifically lists the AHA BLS Provider course as an approved BLS/CPR course for EMS professional licensing.

The BLS requirement applies to EMTs across initial licensure, renewal, reciprocity, and other Utah EMS licensing pathways. Utah BEMS also requires an in-person skills evaluation for approved CPR courses.

If you need BLS certification or renewal as a Utah EMT, you can complete an AHA BLS Provider course through Utah CPR Classes and maintain the CPR credential required for your EMS role.

Overview of BLS Certification for EMTs

BLS is the foundational life support certification for EMTs. EMTs frequently provide emergency care before a patient reaches a hospital, making rapid recognition of cardiac arrest, high-quality CPR, AED use, and effective ventilation essential components of their role.

BLS focuses on immediate life support for adults, children, and infants. The AHA BLS Provider course teaches single-rescuer and team-based basic life support skills, recognition of life-threatening emergencies, high-quality chest compressions, appropriate ventilation, and early AED use.

For Utah EMTs, BLS is not simply an optional workplace credential. Utah BEMS requires verification of a BLS Provider CPR course for EMS licensure at all levels, including EMT. The current BEMS approved-course list specifically identifies American Heart Association BLS Provider as an accepted BLS/CPR course.

EMTs should select the BLS course that satisfies both their Utah EMS licensing requirements and their employer’s credentialing requirements.

Who is BLS Ideal for?

What BLS Skills Do EMTs Need?

Important: EMT certification and training requirements in Utah may vary by certification level, EMS agency, employer, and role. Always verify which CPR, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and other training or credentialing courses are required by your specific Utah EMS agency or employer before registering.

What Special Situations Do EMTs Face That Require CPR?

EMTs frequently encounter patients outside controlled clinical environments. Cardiac and respiratory emergencies can occur in homes, vehicles, workplaces, public locations, nursing facilities, sporting venues, and during ambulance transport.

01
Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

EMTs may arrive at a residence, business, roadway, public location, or other scene where a patient is already in cardiac arrest. EMTs must recognize cardiac arrest, initiate high-quality CPR, deploy an AED, provide ventilation, and coordinate with additional EMS personnel.

02
Cardiac Arrest During Ambulance Response

A patient can deteriorate before an ambulance arrives or while EMTs are providing treatment at the scene. EMTs must be prepared to transition rapidly from patient assessment to CPR and AED use when cardiac arrest occurs.

03
Respiratory Arrest

Respiratory emergencies involving overdose, airway obstruction, severe asthma, respiratory illness, or other conditions can progress to respiratory arrest. EMTs may need to provide ventilation and begin CPR when the patient progresses to cardiac arrest.

04
Opioid Overdose

An opioid overdose can cause severe respiratory depression and progress to cardiac arrest. EMTs may need to provide ventilation, CPR when indicated, AED use, and other interventions within their EMS scope and local protocols.

05
Choking Emergencies

EMTs respond to patients with severe airway obstruction in homes, restaurants, workplaces, nursing facilities, schools, and public locations. A complete airway obstruction can progress to unconsciousness and cardiac arrest.

06
Traumatic Emergencies

Motor-vehicle collisions, falls, penetrating injuries, industrial accidents, and other trauma can produce life-threatening deterioration. EMTs must recognize when a patient requires immediate resuscitation while managing other emergency priorities within their scope of practice.

What Makes CPR Certification Non-Negotiable for EMTs?

Utah EMS Licensure Requires BLS

Utah BEMS requires EMT applicants and renewing EMS professionals to verify completion of a BLS Provider CPR course. The BEMS-approved course list specifically recognizes AHA BLS Provider as an accepted course.

EMTs Provide Care Before Hospital Arrival

EMTs frequently begin emergency treatment before a patient reaches an emergency department. CPR, AED use, ventilation, and rapid recognition of cardiac arrest are therefore fundamental EMS skills.

Cardiac Arrest Requires Immediate Action

An EMT cannot wait until a patient reaches the hospital before beginning resuscitation. When cardiac arrest occurs, EMTs must initiate the appropriate emergency response immediately.

EMTs Work in Uncontrolled Environments

Unlike hospital-based providers, EMTs can provide care in homes, streets, vehicles, workplaces, public venues, and other locations where space, equipment, lighting, weather, and bystander conditions can vary.

BLS Supports Team-Based EMS Resuscitation

EMTs commonly work alongside other EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, police officers, and other responders. BLS training develops both single-rescuer and team-based resuscitation skills that support coordinated emergency response.

On-Site CPR & BLS Training for EMS Teams

EMS organizations often need to train multiple EMTs, paramedics, supervisors, and other emergency personnel while maintaining adequate staffing and emergency coverage.

Utah CPR Classes provides on-site CPR and BLS training for eligible EMS organizations and groups. Bringing BLS training to an organization can make it easier to coordinate certification around shift schedules, station coverage, ambulance availability, and emergency-response responsibilities.

On-site training is suitable for:

I was worried that this might be too complicated for me being a first time learner. The interactive portion on the dummies could not have been easier. I was reassured by the prompts the entire time, given direction and knew if I passed right away. I like how you are given as many chances to pass as needed so it takes the pressure off if being perfect. This was great!

I recently missed our office annual office BLS recert and had to scramble for a quick substitute. As a hospice nurse, my schedule is a bit hectic, and this option " fit the bill". Allowing home time to complete the e- learning course allowed me to start and stop the modules at my convenience. I appreciated the host doing a virtual facility tour of the building allowing me to feel confident on finding/ entering the skills training room on the 3rd floor. I also appreciated the interactive computer with a non- judgemental correction and suggestions to enhance and complete my skills pass-off. The optional practice session with it's constructive support before each tested section is a plus! I would recommend this experience to busy medical professionals.
Response from the owner:Laurie, we appreciate the thoughtful review and recommendation. We are glad the at-home e-learning, virtual tour, interactive computer feedback and optional practice session fit your hectic schedule and helped you feel prepared for skills testing. We value your trust and look forward to supporting your future needs.
Easy. Fast. Informative. Exactly what I needed
Response from the owner:Thanks for the perfect rating, Stephanie. We’re glad the experience was quick, clear and helpful and that it met your needs. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to assisting you again.

I admit that I was intimidated knowing that it was going to be just me, a computer, and manikins in the room. I'll only ever be doing it this way in the future now. I really appreciate the heads-up email about an hour prior providing common mistakes and videos to review beforehand. I took my time while in the room and taking advantage of every practice opportunity it provided prior to the assessment. Took me no longer than 15 minutes. Incredibly easy to use, helpful feedback, and helps me feel more confident. This process makes you feel like it's the absolute best and efficient use of your time. Great company. Thanks for providing this service! I'll be back in 2 years.
Response from the owner:Vanessa, thank you for sharing your experience. We are so pleased the pre-session email, practice opportunities, and feedback made the session efficient and confidence-building. We look forward to welcoming you again in two years.
Response from the owner:We truly appreciate your fantastic review. It was a pleasure serving you, and we look forward to your next visit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an EMT Use a BLS Certification From a Previous Employer for Utah Licensure?

Yes, provided the BLS credential is current and meets Utah BEMS requirements. The certification does not have to be obtained through the EMT’s current employer.

An EMT should complete an approved BLS Provider course and obtain a current credential before submitting the required renewal documentation. An expired BLS credential does not satisfy a requirement for current BLS certification.

Utah BEMS requires an in-person skills evaluation for approved CPR courses. Blended learning can be used when the course format includes the required in-person skills component.

Yes. EMTs can complete renewal training before their existing BLS credential expires. Completing renewal in advance helps prevent a lapse in the credential required for their EMS responsibilities.
