American Heart Association (AHA) Authorized

CPR Certification
for Dental Assistants in Utah | BLS

Dental assistants in Utah need current CPR or BLS certification to work in a dental office. For dental assistants seeking an American Heart Association credential, the AHA BLS Provider Course provides healthcare-level CPR training covering high-quality CPR, AED use, ventilation, and airway obstruction response. Utah’s dental-assistant rule specifically requires current CPR or BLS certification and does not establish ACLS or PALS as general certification requirements for dental assistants.

Dental assistants work directly with patients throughout examinations, restorative procedures, extractions, radiographs, orthodontic appointments, oral surgery, and other dental procedures. Because they are often positioned chairside, dental assistants need to recognize a sudden change in a patient’s condition and respond quickly while assisting the dentist and activating the practice’s emergency procedures.

Keeping your CPR or BLS certification current helps you maintain the credential required for your dental-assisting role while staying prepared to respond when a medical emergency occurs in the dental office.

Overview of BLS Certification for Dental Assistants

BLS is the primary AHA life support course relevant to dental assistants who need professional-level CPR training. The AHA BLS Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals and trained first responders who provide patient care. It covers recognition of life-threatening emergencies, high-quality CPR, AED use, ventilation, and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction.

For dental assistants, these skills are relevant to emergencies that can develop while a patient is receiving treatment or recovering in the dental office.

BLS training includes:

  • Adult CPR
  • Child and infant CPR
  • AED use
  • Rescue breathing and ventilation
  • Recognition of cardiac arrest
  • Recognition of abnormal breathing
  • Foreign-body airway obstruction response
  • Two-rescuer CPR
  • Team-based resuscitation
  • High-quality chest compressions
  • Coordinated emergency response

Utah dental assistants should maintain the current CPR or BLS credential required by Utah’s dental practice rules and their employer. Current Utah administrative rules state that a dental assistant may not work without current CPR or BLS certification.

Which Dental Assistants Need CPR or BLS Certification?

Important: Dental assisting requirements in Utah vary based on the type of dental assisting duties performed and the credentials or certifications required by the employer and Utah regulatory authorities. Always verify the current education, certification, training, and credentialing requirements with the specific dental practice and the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) before registering for a dental assisting program or course.

CPR Skills Dental Assistants Use in the Dental Office

BLS training provides practical skills that apply to the dental team’s initial response to life-threatening emergencies.

01
High-Quality CPR

Dental assistants learn the fundamentals of effective chest compressions and coordinated CPR during cardiac arrest.

02
AED Operation

BLS training teaches early AED use as part of the response to cardiac arrest. Dental assistants who are assigned to retrieve or prepare the AED need to understand how the device fits into the resuscitation sequence.

03
Ventilation

BLS includes ventilation skills used during resuscitation and teaches how ventilation fits into effective CPR.

04
Choking Response

Dental assistants work around the patient’s mouth and airway during dental treatment. BLS training includes recognition and response to foreign-body airway obstruction.

05
Two-Rescuer CPR

Dental office emergencies often involve multiple members of the team. BLS training includes team-based resuscitation skills that help healthcare providers coordinate their response.

06
Adult, Child, and Infant BLS

Dental practices serve patients across different age groups. BLS training covers basic life support for adults, children, and infants.

Medical Emergencies Dental Assistants Need to Be Prepared For

Cardiac Arrest During a Dental Appointment

A patient can suddenly become unresponsive and stop breathing normally while seated in the dental chair.

The dental assistant needs to recognize the emergency, alert the dentist, activate the office response, retrieve the AED, and participate in CPR when directed and trained to do so.

Choking During Treatment

Dental procedures take place around the patient’s mouth and airway. A patient can experience a foreign-body airway obstruction during or around treatment.

BLS training includes recognition and response to foreign-body airway obstruction, giving dental assistants a specific skill relevant to chairside emergencies.

Syncope and Sudden Loss of Consciousness

Patients can faint during dental treatment because of anxiety, pain, blood, positioning, or other medical factors.

A dental assistant may be the first team member to notice that the patient is becoming unresponsive. Quick communication with the dentist allows the practice’s emergency procedure to begin.

Respiratory Distress

A patient may develop difficulty breathing during treatment because of airway obstruction, an underlying medical condition, or another acute problem.

The dental assistant needs to recognize abnormal breathing and communicate the patient’s condition immediately while the dentist evaluates and manages the emergency.

Emergency During Sedation

Some dental practices provide procedures involving sedation or nitrous oxide. Dental assistants working in these environments may have responsibilities related to patient observation, equipment preparation, documentation, and emergency support.

On-Site CPR and BLS Training for Dental Teams

Dental practices often have several assistants and other patient-care staff who need current CPR or BLS certification.

On-site AHA BLS training gives dental practices an option to train multiple eligible employees together while coordinating the course around office hours and patient appointments.

On-site training is suitable for:

I was worried that this might be too complicated for me being a first time learner. The interactive portion on the dummies could not have been easier. I was reassured by the prompts the entire time, given direction and knew if I passed right away. I like how you are given as many chances to pass as needed so it takes the pressure off if being perfect. This was great!

I recently missed our office annual office BLS recert and had to scramble for a quick substitute. As a hospice nurse, my schedule is a bit hectic, and this option " fit the bill". Allowing home time to complete the e- learning course allowed me to start and stop the modules at my convenience. I appreciated the host doing a virtual facility tour of the building allowing me to feel confident on finding/ entering the skills training room on the 3rd floor. I also appreciated the interactive computer with a non- judgemental correction and suggestions to enhance and complete my skills pass-off. The optional practice session with it's constructive support before each tested section is a plus! I would recommend this experience to busy medical professionals.
Response from the owner:Laurie, we appreciate the thoughtful review and recommendation. We are glad the at-home e-learning, virtual tour, interactive computer feedback and optional practice session fit your hectic schedule and helped you feel prepared for skills testing. We value your trust and look forward to supporting your future needs.
Easy. Fast. Informative. Exactly what I needed
Response from the owner:Thanks for the perfect rating, Stephanie. We’re glad the experience was quick, clear and helpful and that it met your needs. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to assisting you again.

I admit that I was intimidated knowing that it was going to be just me, a computer, and manikins in the room. I'll only ever be doing it this way in the future now. I really appreciate the heads-up email about an hour prior providing common mistakes and videos to review beforehand. I took my time while in the room and taking advantage of every practice opportunity it provided prior to the assessment. Took me no longer than 15 minutes. Incredibly easy to use, helpful feedback, and helps me feel more confident. This process makes you feel like it's the absolute best and efficient use of your time. Great company. Thanks for providing this service! I'll be back in 2 years.
Response from the owner:Vanessa, thank you for sharing your experience. We are so pleased the pre-session email, practice opportunities, and feedback made the session efficient and confidence-building. We look forward to welcoming you again in two years.
Response from the owner:We truly appreciate your fantastic review. It was a pleasure serving you, and we look forward to your next visit.
