What is BLS?

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a specialized emergency response training program that teaches individuals how to provide immediate care during life-threatening situations such as cardiac arrest, breathing emergencies, and choking incidents. The training is designed to help responders act quickly, confidently, and effectively until advanced medical assistance arrives. The course focuses on essential lifesaving techniques, emergency recognition, and proper response procedures used in both healthcare settings and public emergencies. Most of the BLS training in Utah combines an online portion with hands-on practice to help students develop the practical skills and confidence needed to respond during critical situations. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certification valid for 2 years that is widely recognized by healthcare employers and organizations.

Who Needs BLS Certification in Utah

Hospital & Clinical Healthcare Staff

BLS certification is essential for healthcare professionals who work in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and other patient care environments throughout Utah. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, phlebotomists, patient care technicians, and hospital support staff are often required to maintain current certification as part of their employment responsibilities. These professionals regularly care for patients who may experience cardiac arrest, breathing emergencies, or sudden medical complications that require immediate intervention. BLS training helps them develop the skills needed to perform CPR, use an AED, assist with airway management, and respond confidently during critical situations where rapid action can save lives.

Emergency & Pre-Hospital Care Providers

Emergency and pre-hospital care providers are among the most common professionals required to maintain active BLS certification in Utah. EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, rescue teams, and emergency responders frequently arrive first at accidents, injuries, and life-threatening medical emergencies where immediate care is necessary. Because these situations are often unpredictable and high pressure, responders must be prepared to perform CPR, assist with breathing support, and operate an AED while stabilizing patients before hospital transport. BLS certification helps strengthen these lifesaving skills and ensures emergency personnel can provide fast, effective care that improves patient outcomes during critical moments in the field.

Dental & Allied Health Professionals

Dental and allied health professionals are also commonly required to hold BLS certification to support patient safety and meet workplace standards in Utah. Dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists frequently work with patients who may have underlying health conditions or experience unexpected emergencies during treatment sessions. BLS training prepares these professionals to recognize warning signs of cardiac arrest, choking, breathing problems, or sudden medical distress and respond appropriately until advanced medical help becomes available. Many healthcare facilities and dental practices require active certification to ensure staff can respond quickly during emergencies.

Pharmacy & Laboratory Professionals

Pharmacy and laboratory professionals may also need BLS certification depending on their responsibilities and work environment. Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medical laboratory technicians, and clinical laboratory personnel often interact directly with patients during vaccinations, testing procedures, specimen collection, and medication services. Although emergencies may be less common in these settings, sudden allergic reactions, fainting episodes, breathing difficulties, or cardiac events can still occur without warning. BLS certification helps these professionals respond quickly and effectively by providing training in CPR, AED use, and emergency response procedures. This preparation helps improve patient safety while waiting for advanced medical assistance.

Students & Trainees in Healthcare Fields

Students preparing for careers in healthcare are often required to complete BLS certification before participating in clinical training or patient care experiences. Nursing students, medical students, EMT trainees, and allied health students enrolled in programs such as respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, radiologic technology, and physical therapy commonly need active certification to meet school and clinical placement requirements. BLS training gives students practical experience in CPR, AED operation, and emergency response skills that are essential in real healthcare environments. Completing certification early also helps students build confidence, improve patient safety awareness, and prepare for the responsibilities they will face during clinical rotations and future employment.

Community & Workplace Safety Roles

BLS certification is also valuable for individuals working in community safety, education, recreation, and workplace wellness roles across Utah. Lifeguards, school health staff, childcare providers, athletic trainers, fitness instructors, security personnel, and corporate safety teams may all encounter medical emergencies that require immediate attention. Situations such as choking, cardiac arrest, severe allergic reactions, or sudden breathing difficulties can happen unexpectedly in schools, gyms, offices, and public facilities. BLS training teaches these professionals how to respond calmly and effectively by performing CPR, using an AED, and providing basic emergency care until medical responders arrive, helping create safer environments for everyone.

I participated in taking the blended class for both BLS and ACLS. I feel like the price was comparable to other places, $390 total cost for the online courses and skill assessments for both, and it is a course that is approved by the American heart association. The online portion for both courses was very straightforward and it had a great review of everything, as a "patient encounter", at the end of each section. The skills assessment was straightforward and it also offered additional videos in case you needed extra help completing the assessments. They also gave out free swag material as well at the end of it. Overall I would recommend this course program to anyone needing new certification or recertification.

FAQ

BLS Certification & Renewal FAQs

Is BLS the Same as CPR?

No. CPR is one of the core skills taught within BLS training, but BLS is more advanced and includes additional emergency response techniques such as team-based resuscitation, AED use, rescue breathing, and managing choking emergencies in healthcare settings.

Most students successfully complete the course when they follow the training materials and participate in the hands-on practice sessions. The course is designed to teach practical lifesaving skills in a clear and structured way.

Yes. The online portion of the BLS course can usually be accessed on computers, tablets, and smartphones, allowing you to study from different devices based on your convenience.

If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can review the material and retake the exam or skills assessment. Our goal is to help you fully understand the training and complete certification with confidence.

The BLS written exam typically includes 25 multiple-choice questions covering CPR techniques, AED use, emergency response procedures, and basic life support concepts taught during the course.

No. While the cognitive portion can be completed online, American Heart Association BLS certification also requires an in-person hands-on skills evaluation to complete the certification process.
